Every meal was the same at my house from nursery school through 2nd grade: meat, starch and a veggie. I wanted to eat at other people's houses so I could try their tasty junk food - chocolate for desert - or change up the order of my meal to better suit my tastes - brownies before the pasta. But all in all, things stayed pretty mild until the first time I tried lima beans. I'd been invited to my best friend's house for a sleep over, and having just turned seven, this still seemed like a big step. Her mom was a little scary, but I knew the family well enough to know I'd be expecting some nice chocolate cake or ice cream for desert. Similar to dinner my house, their one requirement was to eat everything on your plate. The family of eight sat around their large table and served lima beans, fried potatoes, chicken and garlic bread that night. I was always a huge fan of peas and other sweet, mild vegetables, so when the strange bean-like veggies came my way I somehow expected the same sweet familiar taste. Instead, I gagged. But on my plate for good, I somehow thought I had to finish. With every bite, my stomach jumped. I'll never forget that gut wrenching taste. Needless to say, I didn't make it to e chocolate cake.
